UNF Professors Survivors Win $6.2 Million Medical Malpractice Verdict Against Shands Gainesville

On August 11, 2010, a Gainesville jury returned a $6.2 million medical malpractice verdict against Shands Gainesville in favor of the family of a University of North Florida Business School Professor, Cory Fine, PhD.

GAINESVILLE, FL, August 15, 2010 /Diet - Weight Loss PR News/ -- Dr. Fine was 41 years old when he went to Shands Gainesville to undergo gastric bypass surgery for weight loss in December 2002. The operation was uneventful. Five days after the surgery, on December 23, 2002, Dr. Fine developed some breathing difficulties. He was sent without medical monitoring to undergo a CT scan of his lungs. Even though Dr. Fine told the CT techs that he would have difficulty breathing if laid down flat, they elected to strap him down flat to the CT table for several minutes in preparation for the exam. He was then put into the CT machine for the scan and died during the scanning procedure. This complex medical negligence case was litigated by Frank Ashton and Marc Hardesty of Hardesty, Tyde, Green & Ashton, P.A of Jacksonville, Florida.

Dr. Fine is survived by his wife, Lisa, and his 10-year-old son Tyler.
